Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
Am I A Candidate?
You could benefit from microneedling treatments if you have light or mild complexion issues, like a decrease in firmness or uneven texture. Microneedling treatments may also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and pores. Results continue to be seen 2-3 months after your microneedling treatment because the building of collagen and elastin isn't immediate.
How does it work?
Microneedling is performed in a treatment room for around 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or local anesthesia if desired, but most patients report little or no pain and discomfort.
The areas of skin being addressed will be cleaned before the advanced microneedling handpiece is passed evenly over. Once the microneedling is performed, Hyaluronic Acid gel will be used to lubricate and hydrate the skin, then a treatment, like a vitamin-infused serum, may be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer selected for your skin type will be massaged in along with sun protection because the treated skin will be sensitive after the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Microneedling can significantly reduce and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks.
Initially, your skin care professional will apply topical lidocaine to numb the skin and ensure a comfortable and pain-free treatment. Then, a thin layer of topical gel is applied and the pen is gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.
The procedure takes 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.
Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness on the skin. The total healing time depends on the setting used and the number of overlapping passes your skin care professional performs. On average, patients are red for up to 2 to 4 days. Many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after a treatment as collagen production continues.
Some patients only require a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.
